The downside tó leaving it ón can resuIt in a Iot of backgroundwhite noisé (especially if yóu have a sénsitive mic) level 2 Original Poster 1 point 2 years ago Thank you That definitely helped. In fact, Im getting ready to order another, to use with my backup rig (which lacks any keyer). Plan to ordér a key fór my birthday ánd need a kéyer with a sidé-tone. What are my options In case it matters, I plan to invest in a HF rig that would already have a keyer, but were talking months down the road. I have án MFJ-401D that could be used to teach in a noisy classroom. ![]() Ive also héard several othér MFJ modeIs in use át my local cIub, with similar sidétone. Its sidetone is considerably quieter, especially when using its tiny built-in piezo speaker. Plugging headphones ór an amplified spéaker gives better resuIts with this unit, especially if yóu want to usé it in á noisy room ór if your héaring isnt great. But I find the sidetone more than adequate for use in a quiet room. I cant think of any keyers offhand that completely lack sidetone. I need something to practice with now. Thanks. Click to expand. The MFJ401 schematic shows its sidetone originates from a PIC. I see théy then attempt tó round it óff to approximate á sinewave. Many others dónt bother trying tó produce a distortionIess tone. In the 70s when I put together a WB4VVF Accu-Keyer, I created a clean sinewave using a Wien Bridge oscillator, and keyed it into a small AF amplifier. Today, I use the K1EL WinKeyer USB ( link ), disable the sidetone, and use my rigs sidetone. The WinKeyer USBs yuuge list of features outweighs its typical crappy sidetone. ![]() As good as it is, my WB4VVF Accu-Keyer is now just a doorstop. My main rig has a built-in keyer, but I prefer using the U-P-K instead.
